"A lot of scientists today went into science after they got
fired up by science fiction. And it's good for scientists to
watch Sci-Fi, as it forces them to ask deep questions about
the nature of reality. You don't want to just find the right
answers, but to ask the right questions too, and Sci-Fi can
trigger great questions.
"

Its named after the "Babel Conference", from an episode of Star
Trek entitled "
Journey to Babel".  You can learn more about it here.

Side Note: In the episode, "Babel" is pronounced bay-bull, rather
than the Biblical pronunciation
bah-bull, so we say "Bay-bull Con"
(as opposed to Babble Con).  And now you know!
Wonder why its called BabelCon?

Baton Rouge Gears Up For Alien Invasion

Baton Rouge, LA - March, 2009 - A full scale invasion is underway, scheduled for March19-20-21 at the LSU Cook Hotel. And its not just
Trekkies & Klingons... Star Wars fanatics, Doctor Whovians, Firefly browncoats, Stargate travelers, Battlestar Galactica viper pilots, comic
book heroes, and Potterphiles converge for one weekend a year to meet the stars from their favorite TV shows, don elaborate costumes,
and geek-out about what interests them.

The Green Orion Girls are to perform Star Trek belly dances. But its not just Science Fiction that has their attention.

The Anime & Animation programming includes anime panel discussions, and anime movies throughout the weekend. Saturday evening
there is a cosplay competition.

All day, and every night, there will be rotating model rocket launches, knighting ceremonies by the Queen, telescope viewing of the stars,
and the Louisiana Renaissance Festival will host demonstrations.

The Horror programming is produced by staffers from the 13th Gate, a local attraction previously ranked as the number one haunted
house in the country! The cast & crew from 13th Gate will demonstrate costume design, perform makeup demos, give advice on creating
props & acting horrifying, plus a "zombie walk".

The Paranormaltrack features local ghost hunters, Seekers of Unexplained Louisiana (S.O.U.L.).

The Science track includes scientists and speakers from NASA, Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), Brec
Highland Road Observatory (BHRO), the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society (BRAS), LSU, UNO and Xavier University.

In the Fantasy genre, the guest lineup is T. A. Chafin, author of The Nitpickers Guide to the Star Wars Wars Saga; Randy Richards, local
author of the
Dreadmire D&D book, and Denise Roper, author of the Harry Potter analytical book, The Lord of the Hallows.

In the Game Room, attendees will engage in video games, and tabletop games, such as card games, board games, and role-playing
games. There is also "open gaming" for anyone that wants to bring their own games.

BabelCon is a presentation of the Science and Engineering Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to using
Science Fiction media to create interest in Science. You can find out more at www.BabelCon.org.
