Baton Rouge Gears Up For Alien Invasion

Baton Rouge, LA - July, 2009 - A full scale invasion is underway, scheduled for July 17-19 at the LSU Cook Hotel. And its not just Trekkies
& Klingons... Star Wars fanatics, Doctor Whovians, Firefly browncoats, Stargate travelers, Battlestar Galactica viper pilots, comic book
heroes, and Harry Potterphiles converge for one weekend a year to meet the stars from their favorite TV shows, don elaborate costumes,
and geek-out about what interests them.

This year's special guest is Rekha Sharma, who played the Cylon "Tory" in the new Battlestar Galactica TV series on the Sci-Fi channel.
The Green Orion Girls are to perform Star Trek belly dances. But its not just Science Fiction that has their attention.

The Anime programming includes Tiffany Grant, the voice actor for Asuka/Full Metal Alchemist, anime panel discussions, and anime
movies throughout the weekend. Saturday evening there is a costume & anime cosplay competition, followed by jammin' concert featuring
The Consortium of Genius rock band. In the Artist's Alley area, artisans will show their talents and draw pictures for your fun and pleasure.

The Kids track includes fun for the parents too.  All day, every day there will be rotating model rocket launches, knighting ceremonies by
the Queen, telescope viewing of the stars, and the Louisiana Renaissance Festival will host belly dancing, medieval-life demonstrations,
swordplay, jesters, fire-eaters, unicyclists, and the musical stylings of the Bedlam Bards. Also performing are the hilarious Geek Ameoba
comedy troupe.

One new series of programming for this year is Horror, produced by the 13th Gate, a local attraction previously ranked as the number one
haunted house in the country! The cast & crew from 13th Gate will demonstrate costume design, perform makeup demos, give advice on
creating props & acting horrifying, plus a "zombie walk".

The Paranormal program features Patrick Burns from TruTV's show Haunting Evidence, the ghost hunters Louisiana State Paranormal
Research Society (LSPRS); New Orleans ghost tour and paranoormal expert Kalila Smith, and cryptozoologist Dana Holyfield, the current
expert on the Honey Island Swamp Monster.

The Science track has several scientists, including speakers from NASA, Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO),
Brec Highland Road Observatory (BHRO), the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society (BRAS), LSU, UNO and Xavier University.

In the Fantasy genre, the guest lineup is Elizabeth Donald, author of The Dreadmire Chronicles; T. A. Chafin, author of The Nitpickers
Guide to the Star Wars Wars Saga; M.B. Weston, fantasy author of several books; Randy Richards, local author of the Dreadmire D&D
book; and Bob Greenberger, former editor for Marvel & DC Comics.

In the 24-hour Game Room, attendees will engage in video games & LAN competitions, plus tabletop games such as card games, board
games, and role-playing games. There is also "open gaming" for anyone that wants to bring their own games, and Live Action
Role-Playing (LARP) outdoors. The Wandering Men, local game designers, and Randy Richards, Dungeons & Dragons game author, will
both give several talks.

For Immediate Release:
"A lot of scientists today went into science after they got
fired up by science fiction. And it's good for scientists to
watch Sci-Fi, as it forces them to ask deep questions about
the nature of reality. You don't want to just find the right
answers, but to ask the right questions too, and Sci-Fi can
trigger great questions.

Its named after the "Babel Conference", from an episode of Star
Trek entitled "
Journey to Babel".  You can learn more about it here.

Side Note: In the episode, "Babel" is pronounced bay-bull, rather
than the Biblical pronunciation
bah-bull, so we say "Bay-bull Con"
(as opposed to Babble Con).  And now you know!
Wonder why its called BabelCon?
